Our 2023 Summer Road Trip – 16 States, 5,500 Miles, and 75 National Park Sites

Planning for our 2023 summer road trip is finally complete! After wrapping up our winter workamping job in Texas, Lisa, Sierra, and I will be hitting the road on May 29th for what promises to be an unforgettable adventure. Over the next few months, we’ll cover more than 5,500 miles across 16 states, knocking out the last seven we need to officially complete the lower 48 states.

National Parks on Our 2023 Summer Road Trip

If you’ve followed our travels, you know how much we love exploring National Parks. Over the last few years, between COVID and spending back-to-back summers in Yellowstone, we didn’t add as many new parks as usual. That changes this year.

On this trip, we plan to visit at least 75 National Park sites, including National Parks, Monuments, Historic Sites, Trails, Battlefields, Seashores, and Preserves. We’ve been to a handful before, but about 70 will be brand-new, bringing us close to 300 total park sites visited.

If you’re planning your own National Park road trip, this route will be a bucket list journey packed with history, nature, and adventure.

More Than Just National Parks

We’re not limiting ourselves to the parks this summer. Here are a few of the other highlights on our itinerary:

  • New Orleans, Louisiana – Exploring the French Quarter and sampling Creole cuisine.
  • Atlanta, Georgia – Visiting World of Coca-Cola and Stone Mountain Park.
  • Huntsville, Alabama – Touring the U.S. Space & Rocket Center.
  • Pigeon Forge, Tennessee – Spending 10 days at the Great Smoky Mountain Jeep Invasion.
  • Washington, D.C. – Two full weeks in the nation’s capital exploring monuments, memorials, and museums.
  • Nashville, Tennessee – A 10-day stay to dive into country music history and southern eats.

This road trip is a perfect blend of iconic attractions and hidden gems.

A Special Stop in Albany, Georgia

Lisa is a big fan of the Kendrick Brothers’ movies, which started at Sherwood Baptist Church in Albany, Georgia. Their inspiring, faith-based films have touched millions of people, so we’re making a side trip from Pensacola, Florida, to attend church there. It’s one of those unique personal stops that make this journey even more meaningful.

Disney World and Orlando Adventures

From Albany, we’ll head back to Florida for two weeks in Orlando.

  • Week One: Camping at Disney’s Fort Wilderness Resort & Campground and spending five magical days at Walt Disney World. Sierra will be living it up too, with a stay at the Best Friends Pet Hotel at Disney World.
  • Week Two: Settling into Orlando Thousand Trails to check out other attractions in the area, from theme parks to local experiences.

Connecting with Friends and Family

One of the best parts of full-time RV travel is reconnecting with people along the way. We’ll be making time to visit friends and family whenever our route brings us nearby. Those little reunions are what make long road trips even more special.

Wrapping Up – An Epic Summer Ahead

With 16 states, 5,500+ miles, 75 National Park sites, and countless unique attractions, this is shaping up to be one of our most epic trips yet. From history-rich Washington, D.C., to the thrills of Disney World, and everything in between, we’re ready for the adventure.

If you’d like to follow us on our Facebook Page, Instagram, or Twitter, we’d love to have you along for the ride.
