If you’re looking for one of the most fun things to do near Destin, a trip out to Crab Island should absolutely be on your list. During our time along Florida’s Emerald Coast, we booked a 3-hour excursion with Crab Island Explorer, and it ended up being one of the highlights of our stay.
Crab Island is one of those places that’s hard to fully explain until you see it for yourself. Hundreds of boats anchored together in shallow emerald water, music drifting across the bay from every direction, floating food vendors cruising by, and people everywhere simply enjoying being out on the water. It’s chaotic, relaxing, entertaining, and uniquely Florida all at the same time.

Arriving for the Tour
We arrived about 30 minutes early and checked in at the dock before boarding. Parking nearby was fairly easy, although I could definitely see it filling quickly during busy summer weekends. Parking cost us $10 for five hours, which honestly wasn’t too bad considering how close it was to the marina.
Boarding was simple and organized, and before long, we were heading out toward Crab Island.
The Ride Out to Crab Island
The boat ride itself was part of the fun. As we cruised through the harbor, the water gradually turned that bright emerald-green color the Destin area is famous for. Boats of every shape and size filled the waterways as we got closer to Crab Island.
You could already hear music in the distance before we even arrived.
As we approached the anchoring area, the scale of Crab Island became obvious. Boats were everywhere. Pontoon boats, center consoles, jet skis, floating inflatables, and groups of people relaxing in the shallow water stretched across the sandbar.
First Impressions of Crab Island
Jumping into the water was a bit shocking at first. It was definitely colder than expected, especially for an 85-degree day in May. After a few minutes, though, the water felt refreshing.
The beautiful, teal-colored water in the shallows was incredibly impressive. Combined with the white sandy bottom, the entire area almost looked tropical.
One of the wildest parts of the experience was the soundscape. Music was coming from every direction imaginable — country from one boat, classic rock from another, hip-hop somewhere farther away — all blending together into this oddly entertaining background noise that somehow worked perfectly for the atmosphere.
Even though it was crowded, that honestly added to the fun. Watching hundreds of boats gathered together in the shallow emerald water made the entire place feel like one giant floating party.
Floating Food Boats and Vendors
One of our favorite parts of the experience was watching the floating food boats moving through the crowds, selling food, drinks, ice cream, and souvenirs.
And yes… You can actually buy Chick-fil-A while floating at Crab Island.
There was something hilarious and oddly impressive about standing waist-deep in crystal-clear water while a floating boat nearby was selling chicken sandwiches. It’s one of those uniquely Destin experiences you don’t forget.
The floating vendors really gave Crab Island an almost festival-like atmosphere out on the water.
Is the Crab Island Explorer Worth It?
For us, absolutely.
The tour made everything easy:
- No worrying about navigating busy waterways
- No dealing with anchoring
- No stress operating a rental boat
- Just show up and enjoy the experience
For first-time visitors to Crab Island, I think a guided excursion like Crab Island Explorer is a great introduction.
That said, after experiencing it once, we’d probably rent a pontoon boat ourselves next time. Having your own boat would give you more flexibility and allow you to stay longer if you wanted.

Final Thoughts
Our trip to Crab Island with Crab Island Explorer ended up being one of the most fun afternoons we had in the Destin area.
Between the emerald water, floating food vendors, music, and endless boats gathered together in the shallows, Crab Island really does feel like a floating beach party in the middle of the bay.
It’s touristy.
It’s crowded.
It’s loud.
And honestly… that’s part of what makes it so much fun.
