As we travel across the country in our motorhome, each destination presents its own unique set of wonders and surprises. If you’ve ever wondered what it might be like to walk through a full-size replica of Noah’s Ark, wonder no more—the Ark Encounter in Williamstown, Kentucky, makes that dream a reality. The Ark Encounter promises and delivers a unique blend of adventure, education, and spiritual reflection. Lisa and I recently took a detour from our usual nature-heavy RV route to check out this larger-than-life attraction, and let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint.

Embarking on this journey, we were driven by more than just curiosity. As full-time RVers, we seek out experiences that not only quench our thirst for exploration but also provide us with stories to share and lessons to learn. The Ark Encounter, nestled in the lush landscapes of Kentucky, seemed like a perfect fusion of our love for travel, history, and photography.

In this blog post, we’ll take you through our entire experience – the awe-inspiring moments of standing before the Ark, and the many discoveries within its wooden walls. We aim to share not just a recount of our visit, but also the tips, insights, and heartfelt moments that made our time at the Ark Encounter truly memorable.
Join us as we recount the highlights of our visit, share some practical advice for fellow RVers and travelers, and reveal how a trip to this biblical marvel can be more than just a day’s outing, but a journey into the past, an artistic exploration, and a personal voyage all rolled into one.
What Is the Ark Encounter?
The Ark Encounter is a life-size replica of Noah’s Ark based on the biblical dimensions: 510 feet long, 85 feet wide, and 51 feet high—roughly the size of a modern cruise ship. It was built to bring the Genesis flood narrative to life and give visitors a deeper appreciation for what the experience might have been like for Noah and his family.
But this isn’t just a wooden shell with a few displays—this is an immersive, thoughtfully designed museum that spans multiple levels inside the Ark, with exhibits that explore everything from animal care and ancient engineering to theological questions and family life aboard the Ark.
First Impressions
Arrival at the Ark
The moment we first caught sight of the Ark, it was like stepping into a different world. There it stood, massive and majestic against the Kentucky skyline, a stunning testament to the biblical tale that has fascinated generations. The sheer size of the Ark was breathtaking — it was hard to believe that we were looking at a full-scale model of Noah’s vessel. We could feel a mix of excitement and awe wash over us as we walked toward the massive ship, our eyes fixed on the impressive structure before us.

Exploring the Ark Encounter
The Ark Itself
As we stood before the entrance, the Ark’s sheer magnitude struck us once again. Built to biblical specifications, it’s a marvel of ancient engineering reimagined in the modern world. The craftsmanship was impeccable, with each plank and beam telling a story of dedication and skill. Walking alongside the Ark, its length and height never ceased to amaze us — it was like seeing a piece of history brought to life.
Inside the Ark
The Ark is divided into three decks, each packed with exhibits that blend storytelling, science, and faith. Whether or not you believe in a literal flood, you can’t help but be impressed by the craftsmanship and detail in each display. Some highlights:
- Animal Cages and Feeding Systems – These explain how Noah might have cared for thousands of animals on board. It’s more ingenious than you might think.
- Living Quarters – A peek into how Noah’s family could have lived during the voyage. Think tiny house meets ancient survival bunker.
- Theological Exhibits – Thought-provoking panels explore questions like, “Was the Ark really seaworthy?” and “Where did all the water come from?”

There are also lifelike animal models, ambient sound effects (you’ll hear thunder, creaking wood, and animal noises), and subtle lighting that adds to the immersive vibe. It’s easy to spend 3 to 5 hours inside without realizing how much time has passed.

Interactive Experiences
One of the highlights of our visit was the interactive exhibits. These weren’t just for kids; they engaged visitors of all ages, inviting us to be a part of the Ark’s story. Whether it was navigating through ancient maps or trying out traditional woodworking techniques, each activity added a layer of depth to our experience. It was a hands-on way to connect with history, making the visit educational and fun.

Beyond the Ark
The Ark Encounter isn’t just the Ark. The surrounding park includes:
- The Ararat Ridge Zoo – A family-friendly petting zoo and animal exhibits with camels, kangaroos, ostriches, and more.
- Zip Lines and Aerial Challenge Courses – For those with an adventurous side.
- Truth Traveler Virtual Reality Experience – A motion-seat ride that takes you on a journey back to the days of Noah.
- Gift Shops & Dining – There’s a full-service restaurant (Emzara’s Buffet) with a decent spread, plus food stands and snack carts.
There’s even a 40 Days & 40 Nights Christian music festival in the summer, with live performances from national artists.

Reflections on the Experience
Personal Takeaways
On the day of our visit, we were lucky enough to catch a presentation by Answers in Genesis and Ark Encounter founder, Ken Ham. His speech was very thought-provoking. We’re glad we caught it.

As we left the Ark Encounter, we found ourselves reflecting deeply on the experience. It was more than just a visit to a historical replica; it was a journey that touched on themes of faith, human ingenuity, and the power of storytelling. The Ark Encounter challenged us to think about ancient narratives in a new light and appreciate the universality of certain human experiences, such as resilience in the face of adversity.
As full-time RVers, we’re always seeking experiences that broaden our horizons and deepen our understanding of the world, and our visit to the Ark Encounter did just that. It was a reminder of why we chose this lifestyle in the first place — to explore, learn, and grow through our travels.
Tips for Visiting the Ark Encounter
Here’s what we learned that might help you make the most of your visit:
- Get there early – It can get crowded, especially during peak travel season.
- Dress comfortably – You’ll do a lot of walking, mostly indoors, but the grounds are extensive.
- Buy tickets online – It’s cheaper and saves time.
- Plan for at least one full day – You’ll need it if you want to see everything.
- Combine with the Creation Museum – Located about 45 minutes away in Petersburg, KY, and included in a combo ticket. This is what we did.
Exploring Beyond the Ark: The Creation Museum
As part of our journey through Kentucky, we also had the opportunity to visit the Creation Museum, another fascinating attraction that complements the Ark Encounter. Located in Petersburg, Kentucky, just a short drive from the Ark, the Creation Museum offers a different but equally intriguing experience.

The Creation Museum Experience
The Creation Museum is a 75,000-square-foot facility that brings biblical history to life. It features a variety of exhibits, including stunning botanical gardens, a planetarium, and a recreation of biblical events. What struck us the most was the museum’s dedication to merging scientific inquiry with biblical narrative, presenting an alternative viewpoint to natural history.

Exhibits and Highlights
The museum’s exhibits range from animatronic dinosaurs to representations of Eden. One of the highlights for us was the beautiful garden outside, which offered a tranquil space for reflection. The planetarium show was another must-see, providing an immersive experience that explores the universe from a biblical perspective.
Tips for Visiting
- Combination Tickets: If you plan to visit both the Ark Encounter and the Creation Museum, look into combination tickets for a better deal.
- Time Allocation: We recommend dedicating at least a full day to the Creation Museum, as there is a lot to see and explore.
- Interactive Exhibits: The museum is also family-friendly, with many interactive exhibits that engage children and adults alike.
Our Reflections
Visiting the Creation Museum added depth to our Kentucky adventure. It was enlightening to see how the museum interprets the intersection of faith, history, and science. Whether you agree with its perspectives or not, it’s an intriguing visit that prompts thoughtful reflection and discussion.
Travel Tips and Recommendations
Best Times to Visit
Our experience taught us that timing is key when visiting the Ark Encounter. We found that visiting during the off-peak season (like late spring or early fall) offers a more relaxed experience, with fewer crowds and more comfortable weather. This allows for a more leisurely exploration of the Ark and its surroundings. Additionally, check the Ark Encounter’s calendar for special events or exhibitions that might align with your interests.
