Rip’s Rookery is located at 5505 Rip Van Winkle Road, New Iberia, Louisiana 70560, on Jefferson Island near the entrance to the historic Rip Van Winkle Gardens. The rookery sits beside Lake Peigneur and is approximately 20 minutes south of downtown New Iberia. It is free to visit and open year-round.
What Is Rip’s Rookery?
Rip’s Rookery is a man-made wetland and bird nesting habitat located on Jefferson Island near Lake Peigneur. The rookery was specifically designed to provide protected nesting areas for wading birds.
The area consists of ponds, marsh vegetation, bald cypress trees, and small islands that help keep predators away from nesting birds. A walking path circles much of the rookery, giving visitors excellent viewing opportunities from multiple angles.
Jefferson Island itself is one of Louisiana’s famous salt dome “islands,” rising above the surrounding flat marshlands of South Louisiana. The elevated terrain and wetlands create an ideal habitat for wildlife.
During our visit, we spent far more time here than we expected. Between the roseate spoonbills, nesting egrets, turtles sunning on logs, and several alligators patrolling the water, there always seemed to be something happening. It quickly became one of our favorite wildlife photography stops in South Louisiana.
Birds You May See at Rip’s Rookery
One of the biggest draws to Rip’s Rookery is the incredible variety of bird species found here throughout the year.
During nesting season, photographers and birders flock to the rookery to capture images of:
- Roseate Spoonbills
- Great Blue Herons
- Little Blue Herons
- Tricolored Herons
- Green Herons
- Great Egrets
- Snowy Egrets
- Cattle Egrets
- Black-crowned Night Herons
- White Ibis

The roseate spoonbills are easily the stars of the show. Their bright pink feathers almost look unreal in person, especially during golden hour when the light reflects off the water.
If you have never seen spoonbills nesting, Rip’s Rookery is one of the best places in Louisiana to experience it.
Alligators and Turtles at Rip’s Rookery
Like many wetlands in South Louisiana, Rip’s Rookery is home to more than just birds. During our visit, we spotted several American alligators as well as numerous turtles throughout the ponds. The turtles could often be seen lined up on logs and other sunny spots around the water, soaking up the warmth between swims.
Most of the alligators appeared content to sun themselves along the banks or quietly patrol the water beneath the nesting birds. While they may seem out of place among the spoonbills, egrets, and herons, alligators actually play an important role in the ecosystem.
Interestingly, alligators can help protect a rookery by discouraging some predators from reaching nesting areas, providing an extra layer of protection for eggs and chicks.
The combination of colorful birds, turtles basking in the sun, and the occasional alligator sighting adds another layer of wildlife viewing to a visit here.
As always, give all wildlife plenty of space. Never feed alligators or turtles, and keep a close eye on children and pets near the water’s edge.
A Dream Location for Wildlife Photography
Rip’s Rookery is incredibly photographer-friendly.
Unlike many wildlife refuges, where birds can be extremely distant, many of the birds here nest surprisingly close to the walking path. Depending on the season and water levels, you can often capture detailed images without needing massive super-telephoto lenses.
That said, longer lenses definitely help.
For bird photography, lenses in the 200mm to 600mm range work extremely well here. Early morning and late afternoon provide the best lighting and the most bird activity.
Some photography tips for visiting Rip’s Rookery:
- Arrive shortly after sunrise for the best light
- Bring a long lens if possible
- Watch for birds flying between nesting areas
- Look for reflections in calm water
- Be patient and observe behavior patterns
- Use faster shutter speeds for birds in flight
- Bring sunscreen and bug spray during warmer months
You’ll also want to keep an eye out for water snakes around the ponds. They are part of the ecosystem here and are commonly seen around the wetlands.

Spring is generally considered the best time to visit.
From roughly February through May, nesting activity peaks and the rookery becomes incredibly active. Birds gather in large numbers, and many species begin nesting and raising chicks.
This is also when photographers have the best opportunities to capture:

- Birds carrying nesting material
- Chicks in the nests
- Birds in breeding plumage
Summer can still be productive, although heat and humidity increase significantly.
Winter months are quieter but still offer opportunities to see a variety of waterfowl and resident birds.

Rip’s Rookery features a relatively easy walking path around the wetland area.
The trail is mostly flat and accessible for most visitors. You do not need to be an experienced hiker to enjoy the area.
There are no major visitor facilities directly at the rookery itself, but nearby Rip Van Winkle Gardens offers:

- Historic mansion tours
- Additional walking paths
Many visitors combine a stop at Rip’s Rookery with a visit to Rip Van Winkle Gardens and Jefferson Island, although we didn’t go.

Rip Van Winkle Gardens
Located immediately next to the rookery, Rip Van Winkle Gardens features beautiful semi-tropical gardens, giant oak trees, and the historic Joseph Jefferson Mansion.
Lake Peigneur
Lake Peigneur has one of the most fascinating geological stories in Louisiana history after an accidental drilling disaster caused the lake to dramatically change depth and direction.
Avery Island
Not far away, Avery Island is home to the famous TABASCO factory and Jungle Gardens, another fantastic birding and photography destination.

- Bring water, especially during the summer

Rip’s Rookery is a fantastic place for bird and wildlife photography. During our visit, we photographed a wide range of subjects, including roseate spoonbills, egrets, alligators, and turtles.
For most of the photos in this article, we used our Nikon camera gear along with a telephoto lens to capture wildlife from a respectful distance. One lens that worked especially well here was the Nikon Z 28-400mm. The wide zoom range made it easy to photograph birds both near and far without having to constantly change lenses.
