Before visiting Mardi Gras World, we thought the floats were impressive. After visiting, we realized we had no idea how much work, creativity, and craftsmanship went into bringing Mardi Gras to life. A visit to Mardi Gras World gives you a backstage pass into the creativity, craftsmanship, and pure chaos behind Carnival season.
We got an up-close look at the enormous parade floats, giant props, and colorful sculptures that make Mardi Gras one of the most famous celebrations in the world. It was one of those attractions that turned out to be far more interesting than we expected.
One thing that surprised us was the variety of float themes. During our visit, we saw everything from giant jesters and dragons to sea turtles, treasure chests, pirates, skeletons, sports-themed displays, and even larger-than-life recreations inspired by famous works of art. Around every corner was something completely unexpected.

What Is Mardi Gras World?
Located along the Mississippi River, Mardi Gras World is a working float-building warehouse operated by Blaine Kern Studios. Since 1947, they’ve been creating many of the elaborate floats used in New Orleans Mardi Gras parades.
This isn’t just a museum filled with old parade pieces behind glass. It’s an active production facility where artists and craftsmen are constantly building, painting, sculpting, and repairing floats for upcoming parades and events.
Walking through the building felt like stepping into a giant theatrical workshop mixed with an art studio.
Getting to Mardi Gras World
Parking at Mardi Gras World itself is limited and not free, so we decided to take advantage of the complimentary shuttle service instead.
We parked near the French Quarter and caught the free shuttle from The Ritz-Carlton, New Orleans. The shuttle was easy, convenient, and saved us from dealing with traffic and parking near the attraction.

Honestly, for anyone already staying downtown, the shuttle is probably the easiest way to visit.
First Impressions
The moment we walked inside, we were surrounded by towering parade figures, oversized dragons, jesters, Mardi Gras masks, and colorful props stretching toward the ceiling.
Some of the sculptures were several stories tall.
As photographers, this place was a blast. Everywhere we looked, there were vibrant colors, dramatic lighting, textures, and unique compositions. It’s nearly impossible to leave without filling up a memory card.
The Guided Tour
Admission includes a guided tour, which starts with a short video explaining the history of Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the evolution of float building over the decades.
The guide shared stories about the different krewes, parade traditions, and how float themes are developed each year. Even if you’ve attended Mardi Gras before, there’s a good chance you’ll learn something new.
One of the most interesting parts was hearing how early floats were built from materials like papier-mâché before modern foam sculpting techniques became standard.
Walking Through the Float Warehouse
After the introduction, we were turned loose to explore the massive warehouse.
This was easily the highlight of the visit.
You can wander among completed floats, partially built creations, and giant sculptures waiting to be painted. Some sections looked polished and parade-ready, while others revealed the raw framework and construction process behind the scenes.
The scale is hard to describe until you stand next to one of these floats in person.
A Photographer’s Dream
For photographers, Mardi Gras World is packed with opportunities. The giant floats, vibrant colors, and incredible details make it one of the most unique indoor photography locations we’ve visited.
Lighting varies throughout the warehouse. Some areas are brightly lit while others can be a bit darker, so it’s helpful to have a camera that handles higher ISO settings well.
I primarily used my Nikon Z system during our visit. The Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 proved to be an excellent all-around lens for capturing everything from full float displays to detailed artwork and textures. If I could only bring one lens here, this would probably be it.
A few photography tips for visiting Mardi Gras World:
- A wide-angle lens helps photograph the massive floats.
- Mid-range zooms are great for both wide scenes and detail shots.
- Don’t focus only on the finished floats. Some of the best images come from paint brushes, sculpting tools, and works-in-progress.
- Include people in a few photos to show the incredible size of the displays.
- Look up. Some of the most interesting details are high above eye level.
- Shoot both horizontal and vertical images if you create blog content or Pinterest pins.

- Nikon Z 28-400mm f/4-8 for isolating details high on the floats
- Extra batteries

One thing we quickly discovered is that it’s easy to spend far longer here than planned. Between the colorful displays, giant sculptures, and endless details, Mardi Gras World is one of those places where photographers can easily fill a memory card before realizing how much time has passed.
King Cake Included
One unexpected bonus during the tour was getting to sample traditional King Cake.
If you’ve never had King Cake before, think of it as a colorful cinnamon pastry covered in icing and Mardi Gras-colored sugar. It’s a fun little addition that helps round out the overall experience.
Is Mardi Gras World Worth Visiting?
Absolutely.
Even if you’re not visiting during Mardi Gras season, Mardi Gras World offers a fascinating behind-the-scenes look at one of America’s most iconic celebrations.
It’s family-friendly, visually impressive, and genuinely unique. We expected a quick tourist stop and ended up spending far more time exploring and taking photos than planned.
For anyone interested in art, photography, festivals, theater production, or New Orleans culture, this place is well worth adding to your itinerary.

For our New Orleans visit, we stayed at Bayou Segnette State Park, located just across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans.
The campground offers spacious sites with full hookups, a quiet setting, and easy access to the city while still feeling removed from the hustle and bustle of the French Quarter. It made a great home base for exploring New Orleans attractions like Mardi Gras World, the French Quarter, Jackson Square, and more.
The drive into downtown was straightforward, and we found it to be a good balance between convenience and a more relaxed camping experience.
