Exploring Fort Pickens – History, Cannons, and Incredible Tunnels

Dark tunnels, massive cannons, towering brick walls, and nearly 200 years of history — Fort Pickens ended up being one of the coolest forts we’ve explored anywhere in the country.

There is something about exploring an old military fort that instantly pulls you back in time, and our visit to Fort Pickens was one of those experiences we will not forget anytime soon. Located on the western end of Santa Rosa Island near Pensacola Beach, Florida, Fort Pickens is filled with history, massive brick walls, old coastal defense cannons, dark tunnels, and beautiful Gulf Coast scenery.

We spent the day wandering through the fort, climbing around the gun emplacements, peeking into old rooms and corridors, and imagining what life must have been like for the soldiers stationed here over the years. Finally Making It to Fort Pickens

This was actually our second attempt to visit Fort Pickens. The last time we were in Pensacola, we planned to explore the fort, but flooding had closed the road leading out to it, so we never made it there.

After missing out the first time, we made sure to add it back to our plans on this trip, and we are really glad we did. Fort Pickens ended up exceeding our expectations and quickly became one of our favorite historic forts we have visited.

The Drive to Fort Pickens

One thing we really enjoyed before even reaching the fort was the drive across Santa Rosa Island. The road leading to Fort Pickens passes through beautiful stretches of the Gulf Islands National Seashore, featuring incredible coastal scenery along the way.

Between the white sand beaches, dunes, Gulf views, and occasional wildlife sightings, the drive itself is worth taking slowly. It feels removed from the busy tourist areas and gives you a chance to enjoy some of the natural beauty of the Pensacola Beach area before arriving at the historic fort.

As the fort finally comes into view in the distance, it immediately grabs your attention with its massive brick walls and historic appearance.

About Fort Pickens

Fort Pickens is part of the Gulf Islands National Seashore and was completed in 1834 as part of the Third System of coastal forts built to defend important American harbors and coastlines. At the time of its completion, it was the largest brick structure on the Gulf of Mexico and played a key role in protecting Pensacola Bay.

One of the fort’s most notable claims to fame is that it remained under Union control throughout the Civil War despite repeated Confederate threats and attacks. In fact, Fort Pickens was one of only four Southern forts that stayed in Union hands for the entire war.

The fort continued serving military purposes for decades afterward and was eventually modernized with newer coastal defense systems. Walking through the massive brick structure today, it is easy to appreciate just how strategically important this location once was.

First Impressions

As soon as we arrived, we could tell this was going to be one of those places where you need plenty of time to explore. From the outside, the fort already appears impressive, with its thick brick walls and expansive parade grounds.

Once inside, we quickly realized how massive the fort really is. The maze-like layout includes tunnels, stairways, arches, gun rooms, courtyards, and countless passageways that seem to go on forever.

One of our favorite parts of visiting historic forts is simply wandering and discovering little details around every corner, and Fort Pickens definitely delivered.

The Best Tunnels We’ve Seen in Any Fort

We have explored several historic forts around the country over the years, and many of them have tunnels and underground passageways. But honestly, none of them were as cool as the tunnels at Fort Pickens.

The tunnels here felt larger, more atmospheric, and far more extensive than what we have seen elsewhere. Some corridors stretched deep into the fort with dim lighting, thick brick walls, and repeating archways that almost felt cinematic.

There were moments when it felt like every turn led to another hidden passageway or stairwell. The cool air inside the tunnels was a welcome break from the Florida heat, and the entire fort had that perfect mix of history and mystery that makes exploring places like this so much fun.

The musty smell of the cool, damp air in the tunnels definitely made the place feel old, while footsteps echoing through the corridors added even more atmosphere to the experience.

One tunnel in particular really stood out during our visit. As we walked farther and farther into it, the light slowly faded until it became almost completely dark. After turning a corner, we suddenly could not see anything at all.

Not wanting to walk face-first into a brick wall, we finally turned on the flashlight on a cell phone and immediately realized we were only about a foot or two away from a dead-end wall. It definitely added a little excitement to exploring the fort and made the tunnels feel even more atmospheric and mysterious.

For us, the tunnels alone made the visit worthwhile.

The Cannons and Coastal Defenses

Of course, one of the biggest attractions at Fort Pickens is seeing the old cannons and artillery positions.

We loved walking around the gun emplacements and getting an up-close look at the massive cannons that once defended Pensacola Bay. Some of the later coastal defense batteries are enormous and really show how military technology evolved over time.

For anyone interested in military history or engineering, Fort Pickens is a fascinating place to explore. Even if you are not a history buff, the scale of these defenses is impressive.

Photography at Fort Pickens

As photographers, Fort Pickens offered endless opportunities for photos. The combination of old brick architecture, repeating arches, rusty cannons, textured walls, and dramatic lighting inside the tunnels created some really interesting compositions.

One thing I especially loved was the strong leading lines throughout the fort. The long tunnel corridors, repeating brick archways, staircases, and rows of cannon positions naturally drew your eye through the scene and made for some really fun compositions to photograph.

Even though the weather was cloudy during one of our visits, the overcast skies actually worked well for photography. The softer light helped bring out the textures in the old brick walls and cannons without the harsh shadows you often get during bright midday sun.

If you visit, bringing both a wide-angle lens and a zoom lens is a good idea. The tunnels and interior spaces work well for wider shots, while a zoom lens is great for picking out architectural details and close-up shots.

Early morning, late afternoon, or even cloudy days, as we had can provide excellent lighting conditions for photographing the fort.

Is Fort Pickens Worth Visiting?

Absolutely. Fort Pickens ended up being one of our favorite historic forts we have visited. Between the massive brick architecture, extensive tunnels, coastal defenses, and beautiful location along the Gulf Coast, it offers far more to explore than we expected.

Even if you are not deeply interested in military history, the fort itself is fascinating to walk through and photograph.

After visiting several forts around the country, Fort Pickens easily stands out as having the coolest tunnel system we have explored so far.

Things to Know Before You Visit

Fort Pickens is a large fort with plenty of areas to explore, so plan on spending at least a couple of hours here. Many areas include stairs, uneven surfaces, and dimly lit tunnels, so comfortable shoes are definitely recommended.

The fort is located inside the Gulf Islands National Seashore, so entrance fees or a National Park pass may apply. There are also beautiful beaches, picnic areas, and scenic drives nearby that make it easy to turn your visit into a full-day adventure.

Tips for Visiting Fort Pickens

Here are a few things we would recommend if you plan to visit:

• Wear comfortable walking shoes because there is a lot to explore
• Bring water, especially during warmer months
• Take your time exploring the tunnels and upper levels
• Bring a flashlight if you enjoy checking out darker areas
• Don’t forget your camera
• Combine your visit with time at the nearby beaches inside the Gulf Islands National Seashore

Pensacola Beach is just a short drive away and is known for its beautiful white sand beaches and emerald-green water. It is a great place to relax after exploring the fort or enjoy a sunset along the Gulf Coast.

Beyond Fort Pickens itself, Gulf Islands National Seashore offers scenic beaches, hiking areas, fishing spots, picnic areas, and wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the area.

Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier

The Pensacola Beach Gulf Pier is a popular spot for fishing, sightseeing, and photography. Even if you do not fish, it is worth walking out onto the pier for views of the Gulf and shoreline.

National Naval Aviation Museum

One of our favorite attractions in the Pensacola area is the National Naval Aviation Museum. The museum features an incredible collection of historic aircraft, aviation exhibits, flight simulators, and military history displays. Aviation enthusiasts could easily spend an entire day there.

Historic Downtown Pensacola

Historic Downtown Pensacola offers restaurants, shops, museums, and historic buildings that showcase the city’s long history and coastal charm.

Watch the Blue Angels Practice

If your timing lines up, watching the Blue Angels practice over Pensacola is an unforgettable experience. The Navy’s famous flight demonstration squadron is based nearby at Naval Air Station Pensacola.

Would we visit again? Absolutely. Fort Pickens exceeded our expectations. The extensive tunnel system, impressive cannons, rich history, and scenic setting make it one of our favorite historic forts we’ve explored anywhere in the United States.

Places like this make history feel real in a way that books and photos simply cannot. Being able to walk through the same corridors and defensive positions used by soldiers nearly two centuries ago was incredibly interesting.
