Avery Island is not actually a real island but a salt dome that is three miles long and two and a half miles wide and located three miles inland from the Louisiana coastline. It is the birthplace of the world-famous Tabasco Sauce, a fiery concoction that has been tantalizing taste buds for over 150 years. Banker Edward McIllhenny invented the pepper sauce in 1868 using the Tabasco pepper variety from Latin America.

The peppers are then mixed with salt and ground into a pulp called mash.

3. Barrel Warehouse

Once the pepper mash arrives at Avery Island, it is placed into barrels and topped with a thick layer of salt to protect it from impurities, and stored in the Barrel Warehouse.
