Yes, you can cook a pizza on a griddle. Cooking a delicious Pizza on the Blackstone Griddle is really easy. We love pizza but while we’re out Gate Guarding in the Texas Oil Fields there are no pizza places close by. Since getting a pizza delivered from the nearest town 30 miles away isn’t going to happen we have to make our own.
Griddles are becoming increasingly popular due to their versatility and excellent cooking results. Many people have trouble believing that they can cook delicious pizzas on a griddle surface, but it is possible and practical.

As full-time RVers, we usually take the easy way in creating meals. We don’t make a lot of items from scratch just for ease of use.
You can make your own dough and create a pizza from scratch and cook it on your Blackstone or another brand griddle.
We use a Blackstone Tailgater Combo. The Tailgater Combo has a grill on one side and a griddle on the other. It is the best of both worlds when it comes to outdoor cooking.
You don’t need to use the Tailgater Combo though. You can use any of the Blackstone Griddles available.
We prefer to buy prepared pizza crusts. You could use Pillsbury frozen crusts or do as we do and use HEB prepackaged crusts. Whatever you decide it’s your pizza your way.
The Blackstone griddle creates a crust that is perfectly crunchy, soft, and flavorful on the inside. Everyone can personalize their pizza for a fun outdoor pizza night. Make tonight Pizza Night!
Making a pizza on the Blackstone Griddle is a little different than a traditional pizza oven. The ingredients are cooked first on the griddle and then once all the toppings are on your pizza then you cook until the cheese is melted.
Ingredients
- Pre-made 12″ Pizza Crust
- Pizza Sauce
- Mozzarella or Italian Cheese (shredded)
- Pepperoni
- Sausage
- Red Onion, diced or sliced
- Green Bell Pepper, diced or sliced
- Red Bell Pepper, diced or sliced
Instructions
The key to getting the crunchy crust and melted cheese is to cover the pizza. This creates an oven-like dome over the pizza so that all the ingredients heat up evenly.
- Prepare Vegetables – Chop, Slice, or Dice your choice of Onions, Green, and Red Peppers.
- Prepare the Griddle – Preheat the Blackstone grill over medium-high heat to approximately 350-400 degrees F.
- Cook the Sausage – Brown the sausage on the Blackstone Griddle and sauté the vegetables until crispy soft (5-6 minutes) on the flat-top griddle.
- Heat the Pepperoni – Then heat the pepperoni on the Blackstone Griddle for 30 seconds on each side.
- Prepare Crust – Brush one side of the pizza crust with olive oil and sprinkle with garlic powder. Place the oiled side down on the griddle and cook for 2-3 minutes until the crust starts to color. While cooking brush more oil on top of the crust and sprinkle with garlic powder. Flip and cook for 2-3 more minutes. Remove from griddle.
- Begin Preparing Pizza – Then assemble the pizzas. Spread approximately ½ cup of pizza sauce on each pre-made pizza crust. Then top with the mozzarella or Italian cheese and the toppings. I prepared my pizzas on a pizza pan so that it was easy to slide them onto the grill.
Place Pizza on Griddle – Then slide the prepared pizzas onto the griddle. Cover and cook for 6-12 minutes until the bottom of the crusts are golden brown and the cheese on top has melted. I use a wok to cover our pizzas.
Serve and Enjoy – Carefully remove the pizzas from the griddle surface, and let them sit for a few minutes. Then they are ready to slice, serve and enjoy.

Can I cook a frozen pizza on a Blackstone?
Yes, you can for sure. I recommend thawing the pizza first and then placing it on the preheated griddle at 400 degrees. You can place the pizza on a pizza stone to cook. Cooking a frozen pizza directly on the griddle can result in the center being uncooked.
It should only take about 5 to 6 minutes to cook. It cooks pretty quickly so you do not want to overcook it. Check the crust every couple of minutes to ensure it does not burn.
What Kind of Cheese Goes on Pizza?
Shredded mozzarella is my cheese of choice. You can use any type of hard cheese that you like. Some like to use slices of fresh mozzarella balls. Many choose to use a blend of different cheeses such as an Italian 6-cheese blend which is Provolone, Asiago, Parmesan, Mozzarella, Romano, and Fontina.
How Do You Store Leftover Pizza?
What leftover pizza? LOL Actually, once the leftover pizza is cool, place it into an airtight container and store it in the refrigerator for up to 6 days.
